Will Thompson
The Good Lord BirdWill Thompson is the younger Thompson brother involved in the Harpers Ferry raid. His brief appearance traces the collapse of the raiders’ position: he escapes the armory, is captured nearby, and is killed at the B&O Bridge, where Henry later sees his body. His fate is confirmed again in the account of the assault on the engine house, which also took his brother and several members of the raiding party.
Capture and Death
Will gets out of the armory but becomes trapped on the second floor of the Gault House hotel across the road. The men who find him take him downstairs and hold him briefly before bringing him to the B&O Bridge. A captain intervenes and tells them to take the prisoner back inside the hotel, but the men disregard him and kill Will on the bridge.
Will falls into the shallow water below. The next morning, Henry sees him floating there from a distance. The scene marks the widening danger around the armory and shows that even an attempted intervention cannot protect the captured raider.
Family and the Raid’s Aftermath
Will is identified as the younger brother of Thompson, who is later killed during the assault on the engine house. In that account, Will himself is already dead, while his brother is among those killed inside with the Coachman, Phil, and Taylor. Watson and Oliver, two of the Old Man’s sons, are also killed; the Emperor is the only one in the engine house to survive the assault, though he is later hanged.
The two accounts place Will’s death within the larger defeat of the raiding party: first, his capture and death at the bridge; then the destruction of the remaining group at the engine house. His brief role makes the raid’s failure concrete through the fate of one young participant and the loss of his brother.
